We report on preparatory work to develop a virtual laboratory for ecosystem services, ESLab, and demonstrate its pilot application in southern Finland. The themes included in the pilot are related to biodiversity conservation, climate mitigation and eutrophication mitigation. ESLab is a research environment for ecosystem services (ES), which considers ES indicators at different landscape scales: habitats, catchments and municipalities and shares the results by a service that utilizes machine readable interfaces. The study area of the pilot application is situated in the boreal region of southern Finland and covers 14 municipalities and ten catchments including forested, agricultural and nature conservation areas. We present case studies including: present carbon budgets of natural ecosystems; future carbon budgets with and without the removal of harvest residues for bioenergy production; and total phosphorus and nitrogen future loads under climate and agricultural yield and price scenarios. The ESLab allows researchers to present and share the results as visual maps, statistics and graphs. Our further aim is to provide a toolbox of easily accessible virtual services for ES researchers, to illustrate the comprehensive societal consequences of multiple decisions (e.g. concerning land use, fertilisation or harvesting) in a changing environment (climate, deposition).

This study uses fatal crash data and geospatial analysis to examine the temporal and spatial distribution of rain-related fatal crashes in Texas from 1982 to 2011. The data were obtained from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The GetisÀOrd G i Ã (d i ) statistic was used to identify spatial clustering patterns of rain-related fatal crashes and their correlation with rainfall and compare them to spatial patterns of other crashes. The spatial statistical analysis reveals spatial patterns for rainrelated crashes that are clustered in different areas at different levels of confidence. The temporal variability of raw and normalized fatal crashes and rain-related crashes was also investigated at the state level. Although the population of Texas increased by more than 67% over the study period, with a corresponding increase in the number of vehicles, the fatal crashes and rainrelated crashes in Texas did not increase but decreased instead. Results suggest that rain is a contributor to crashes in few counties but at less than 95% confidence in some of the wetter counties. These counties should be the focus of further research and detailed analysis to identify underlying crash contributing factors such that safety countermeasures can be developed.

Abstract:Climate change is the subject of intense research, covering a broad range of causes and effects over long periods of time. Large data sources are needed to support this research, prompting scientists to turn to repositories to collect and share data. Many repositories exist with various data formats and access methods, presenting a challenging environment for researchers. Data portals help to address this by providing a central location for data on a specific topic or region. The Nevada Climate Change Portal is one example, which provides data to support research on Nevada's climate. This portal was funded under an NSF EPSCoR grant with a goal of sharing resources with similar portals in New Mexico and Idaho. This paper proposes the ATMOS toolkit to help meet this goal and to address challenges facing climate change researchers. ATMOS is a pluginbased toolkit that provides Access to Map and Tabular Online Services uniformly, regardless of the underlying source. The design and construction of ATMOS are discussed, showing how the toolkit supports the Nevada Climate Change Portal, and how it can meet future needs of researchers.
