Hydrochemical evaluation of Lower Niger Drainage Area, southeastern Nigeria

Abstract: Hydrochemical evaluation of parts of Lower Niger Drainage Area was studied. The distribution and concentration of the major ions were assessed. Atomic absorption spectroscopic and spectrophotometric methods were employed in the analyses of chemical species in water, and Piper, Durov and Schoeller diagrams were used in the processing and interpretation of the results. The results of the hydrochemical analysis show the generalized ionic sequence in the study area as

“…Another source could be from agricultural activities especially fertilizers and herbicides used in the farms and fishery. Previous studies in Imo Shale and Nanka Formation recorded high concentration of the trace elements especially iron (Okolo et al, 2018;Ezeabasli et al, 2014) hence, linking them to geology. The presence of these trace elements is a serious source of concern as the populace in the area drink the water directly without treatment.…”

“…It occurs in several ways and affects many spheres of the environment most importantly the water sources. The deterioration of surface water and groundwater qualities has been attributed to both natural processes and anthropogenic activities (Yan et al, 2015, Okolo et al, 2018, Udoh et al, 2021. These dissolved constituents in water may affect soil fertility.…”

“…The obtained values for chloride were within the permissible limit except for sample R/NWA/4 which was observed to be above the limit in the dry season. Thus, chloride values were observed to be higher in the dry season and this can be attributed to sewage disposal and other anthropogenic activities [27]. Sulphate values range between 41.234 and 75.761 mg/l in both seasons while carbonate values varies between12 and 46 mg/l in wet season and 8 and 30 mg/l in dry seasons.…”

“…Due to its metropolitan nature, there is an increase in industrial and human activities coupled with environmental degradation and indiscriminate refuse disposal. The cottage industries (like the paints, insecticides, agrochemicals) and other commercial businesses in this area, empty their waste into drains, with the aim of emptying them into the River Niger [4,5]. The high volume of these activities poses a threat to the various water sources in the area.…”

“…Rocks and sediments contain contaminants, solutes and groundwater flowing through them dissolves these substances thus changing the chemistry of groundwater repositories. Groundwater suitability depends on the hydrogeochemical properties and susceptibility of the aquifer layers to pollution (Wang et al 2010;Okolo et al 2018;Ekanem et al 2020). Also, the aquifer susceptibility depends on porosity, permeability and overburden thickness of geologic formation (George et al 2014;Obiora et al 2015;Ibuot et al 2017;Oni et al 2017;Ibe et al 2020).…”
