Hydrochemical characteristics and salinization processes of groundwater in the shallow aquifer of Eastern Laizhou Bay, China

Abstract: Abstract:Groundwater salinization has become a crucial environmental problem worldwide and is considered the most widespread form of groundwater contamination in the coastal zone. In this study, a hydrochemical investigation was conducted in the eastern coastal shallow aquifer of Laizhou Bay to identify the hydrochemical characteristics and the salinity of groundwater using ionic ratios, deficit or excess of each ions, saturation indices and factor analysis. The results indicate that groundwater in the study a… Show more

“…Ions like Na and Cl have a definite role in the evaluation of salinization process in the coastal regions (Wen et al 2011;Shammas and Jacks 2007). Based on this common principle, the Na and Cl concentrations were drawn in a bivariate plot with a theoretical mixing line of freshwater and saline water (see Fig.…”

“…In addition, mineralization of soil organic N was another nitrate source of the groundwater. Due to the sea-water intrusion, soil salinization is serious in this region (Wen et al 2012). In order to increase the soil organic matter content and control saline-alkali soil, straw and stalks of crops are widely reused in the study area (Jia et al 2010) to cause increased soil organic N content.…”
