Hydrochemical assessment of water quality for irrigation: A case study of the wetland complex of Guerbes-Sanhadja, North-East of Algeria

Abstract: The wetland complex of Guerbes-Sanhadja (north-eastern Algeria), has experienced in recent years a certain economic expansion, particularly agricultural, about 47% of the useful agricultural area marked by several varieties of crops ranging from market gardening to speculative crops, requiring large quantities of water for irrigation purposes, however the swampy areas are the main sources used for irrigation purposes in this practice. It is therefore necessary for this water to have physicochemical properties … Show more

“…Electrical Conductivity is due to the presence of ions in water. High salinity leads to the accumulation of salts in the root zones of the crop, makes soil compact disturbs osmoregulation, damages plant cells and reduces crop yield (Bauder et al 2011;Hedjal et al 2018;Sreedevi et al 2019;El Bilali & Taleb 2020).…”

“…High carbonates and bicarbonates cause precipitation of Ca 2þ and Mg 2þ (Rawat et al 2018) and intensify the sodium hazard which is generally not reflected by SAR (Chaudhary & Satheeshkumar 2018). Higher RSC leads to an increase in adsorption of sodium in soil (Hedjal et al 2018). RSC (Equation ( 3)) is calculated as…”

“…Singh ( 2000 ) noted that some high salinity classes on the US Salinity (e.g., C3S1, C3S2, C4S1, and C4S2) are suitable for plants with good salt tolerance but its suitability limits to soil with restricted drainage. C4S1 class is used in irrigation under certain conditions of high soil permeability, good leaching plants, and high tolerance to salts, in addition to chemical amendments (Hedjal et al, 2018 ). On the basis of CR for transport of groundwater through pipes, all groundwater samples are unsafe or corrosive except samples G10, G13, G15, and G17.…”

“…Since natural systems present plants with a variety of conflicting forces, plants have developed an extensive defensive system to cope with abiotic and biotic stresses [UL HAQ et al 2019]. Because a multitude of stress factors interact to impact plants, every alteration in plant metabolic physiology cannot be attributed to a single stress component [GAŁCZYŃSKA et al 2019;HEDJAL et al 2018]. Various response pathways are activated in response to a particular stress, and there are several interconnections between signaling routes for herbivorous and pathogens insects [BODEN- HAUSEN, REYMOND 2007].…”
