Hydrocarbons of Biological Origin from a One-Billion-Year-Old Sediment

Abstract: The isoprenoid hydrocarbons, phytane (C 20 H 42 ) and pristane (C 19 H 40 ), are present in the oil seeping from the Precambrian Nonesuch formation at the White Pine Mine, Michigan. Gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry provide the isolation and identification procedures.

“…The WC series samples are overmature, with the T max values ranging from 552 to 603°C. R o values of the samples from the Permian section of the Wangcang area measured by Liang et al 1) are in the range of 1.88%-2.39%. Micrinites are dominant macerals in the kerogens of the P 2 d source rocks.…”

“…Biomarkers are organic compounds derived from biomass and extensively exist in sediments and sedimentary rocks [1,2]. These organic molecules, especially steranes and terpanes, with complex structure and biogenetic indication, have been widely applied in the study of petroleum geochemistry.…”

“…Biomarkers become incorporated into sediments, either freely as bitumen or bound into macromolecular organic matter (kerogen), where they may be preserved for billions of years (Eglinton et al, 1964;. “…Molecular fossils of biogenic lipids (i.e., biomarkers) preserved over geologic time in sedimentary rocks of low metamorphic grade can be used to describe ancient microbiota and environmental conditions (Eglinton et al, 1964;. Because biomarkers are the hydrocarbon skeletons of biogenic precursor lipids, those that are created through known biosynthetic and diagenetic pathways convey information about the identity and physiology of their source organisms Brocks and Pearson, 2005).…”

“…Biological markers or biomarkers (Eglinton et al, 1964;Eglinton and Calvin, 1967) are molecular fossils, which were derived from once living organisms through the earth history. They occur in sediments, rocks, and crude oils and display little or no change in structure from their precursors (Peters et al, 2005).…”
