Hydrocarbon migration in the Solway Basin

Abstract: Carboniferous rocks in the north Solway onshore outcrop show evidence of hydrocarbon migration. Oil residues occur as intergranular bitumen in sandstones, thoriferous bitumen nodules in sandstones and uraniferous bitumens in fractures associated with the North Solway Fault at the northern margin of the Solway Basin. Oil was emplaced in sandstones after the dissolution of dolomite, calcite and clay cements. The radioelement-rich bitumens represent deposition following interactions between migrating hydrocarbons… Show more

“…12). This is consistent with the ages of uraninite inclusions found in bitumens in Carboniferous outcrops along the northern margin of the Solway Basin, which suggest a Jurassic age of migration (Parnell, 1995 and. A significant increase in the level of maturity of the Carboniferous is noted to the SE of the Ramsey-Whitehaven Ridge in the East Irish Sea Basin, where values of VRo are in excess of 1.3% (Fig.…”

“…Extensional faulting around the perimeter of the basin, probably resulting from uplift of the margins, combined with dip towards the basin centre, created the structural traps tested by wells UKl12/15-1 and IOMl12/19-1. Burial history modelling (Newman 1999), together with evidence from uraninite inclusions found in bitumens in Carboniferous outcrops along the northern margin of the Solway Basin (Parnell 1995(Parnell , 1997, suggests that limited migration of hydrocarbons may have taken place during Jurassic time. AFTA data from the Isle of Man and northern coast of the Solway Basin (Green et al 1997) indicate probable uplift during Early Cretaceous time.…”

“…Furthermore, at exciting oxidation states, V may be exactly Lewis's acid. Various oxidation states of V, besides its Lewis acid feature as well as complete hydrolysis, offer it rich reaction adaptability associated with sulfur chelates as well as accumulated oxyanions 21,22 . In modern times, AgNO 3 solution is applied as a gel for the management of new babies' eyes to avoid infections that happen through birth.…”
