The water retention curve (WRC), representing an important key for the modelling of hydro-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils, is still not fully understood, because it originates from microscopic hydraulic and capillary phenomena. Furthermore, its experimental measurement, especially for cyclic drainage and imbibition paths, is challenging and timeconsuming. In this contribution, a recently developed low-cost easy-to-use miniature testing device for the investigation of the WRC of unsaturated granular soils, such as coarse-grained sand and a packing of glass beads, is presented. With the help of the new device, that can be controlled by a Raspberry Pi single-board computer, the hysteretic WRC can be investigated in a conventional macroscopic approach by plotting the macroscopic specimen degree of saturation versus measured matric suction. The test setup allows an automatic measurement of the WRC which is measured continuously following a programmed test procedure. In addition to the technical realisation of the new device, this contribution focuses on macroscopic results of water retention tests. Moreover, the testing device has been designed in a miniaturised size, in order to obtain microscopic insights into the phase distribution during cyclic drainage and imbibition paths with the help of computed tomography in future applications.

Erosion Control and Growth Promotion of W-OH Material on Red Clay Highway Slopes: A Case Study in South China

Ecological restoration is difficult on the red clay highway slopes in the rainy areas in South China that experience severe soil erosion. By using the hydrophilic polyurethane material W-OH to solidify and protect red clay slopes, the erosion control will be substantially improved. We employed simulated rainfall erosion experiments and pot experiments to evaluate the anti-corrosion and growth promotion performances. We found that, (1) in the initial stage of protection, W-OH had the effect of accelerating slope drainage, solidifying the soil structure, and reducing soil loss, with the sediment reduction benefit reaching 37.4–65.3%. (2) The anti-erosion effect was mainly based on soil solidification. (3) The W-OH was affected by rainfall intensity and the W-OH concentration, and the soil erosion prediction equation was constructed according to the observation. (4) W-OH had a promising water retention performance and can promote the germination and late growth of slope plants to reduce the influence of eluviation. (5) The suitable W-OH solution concentration was 3–5% for slope protection herbs and shrubs, which were commonly used in South China. (6) The reduction in porosity was the fundamental cause of water retention improvement. The ecological restoration of slopes is a comprehensive process. Therefore, both anti-erosion performance and later plant growth are necessary. Our research provides a theoretical and experimental basis for applying the W-OH in the ecological restoration of the red clay slopes in subtropical areas and expanding the scope of the W-OH.

Sustainable Green Pavement Using Bio-Based Polyurethane Binder in Tunnel

As a closed space, the functional requirements of the tunnel pavement are very different from ordinary pavements. In recent years, with the increase of requirements for tunnel pavement safety, comfort and environmental friendliness, asphalt pavement has become more and more widely used in long tunnels, due to its low noise, low dust, easy maintenance, and good comfort. However, conventional tunnel asphalt pavements cause significant safety and environmental concerns. The innovative polyurethane thin overlay (PTO) has been developed for the maintenance of existing roads and constructing new roads. Based on the previous study, the concept of PTO may be a feasible and effective way to enrich the innovative functions of tunnel pavement. In this paper, the research aims to evaluate the functional properties of PTO, such as noise reduction, solar reflection and especially combustion properties. Conventional asphalt (Open-graded Friction Course (OGFC) and Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA)) and concrete pavement materials were used as control materials. Compared with conventional tunnel pavement materials, significant improvements were observed in functional properties and environmental performance. Therefore, this innovative wearing layer can potentially provide pavements with new eco-friendly functions. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of these environmentally friendly materials, paving the way for the possible application in tunnels, as well as some other fields, such as race tracks in stadiums.
