Hydraulic analysis of a radial collector well for riverbank filtration near Nakdong River, South Korea

Abstract: A radial collector well is used for the extraction of a large amount of groundwater without causing a deep drawdown at the well's center, and it is appropriate for the supply of municipal water through riverbank filtration (RBF). Flow path changes caused by water extraction through a radial collector well were simulated to estimate the amount of river water induction at a RBF site associated with Nakdong River in South Korea. The structure of the screened horizontal arms of a radial collector well was examined… Show more

“…Using radial well will reduce the load of abstracting water from the centre well and is capable of improving the quality of raw water as it has travelled a distance from its original source which could be the river or the infiltration of rainfall to the ground. Lee et al [10] mentioned that many RBF wells have been used in riparian zones, including both vertical and horizontal (radial collector type) wells. Radial collector wells consist of a vertical caisson, to which a number of horizontal arms are connected.…”

“…The drawdown affects the mixing ratio of different water sources by altering the infiltration capacity of river water. The quantitative calculation of the mixing ratio is mainly based on the study of river water and groundwater interaction, including field tests and model tests, dynamic water analysis, base‐flow separation, hydrochemistry, and groundwater dynamics (Ascott, Lapworth, Gooddy, Sage, & Karapanos, ; Lee, Hyun, Lee, & Shin, ; Rodgers et al, ; Shamsuddin et al, ). Groundwater dynamics and hydrochemical methods have been widely used to calculate the mixing ratio between the surface water and groundwater.…”
