Hydration and Viscoelastic Properties of High- and Low-Density Polymer Brushes Using a Quartz-Crystal Microbalance Based on Admittance Analysis (QCM-A)

Abstract: Experimental Section Materials. 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were purchased from Nakalai Tesque Inc. (Kyoto, Japan) and used following purification by vacuum distillation. N-Isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was purchased from Wako Pure Chemical Industries Ltd. (Osaka, Japan) and recrystallized three times from dichloromethane. 2-Methacryoyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) was kindly gifted from Prof. Ishihara, Tokyo University and used without further purificat… Show more

“…This technique is traditionally based on expensive and bulky lab-based impedance analyzers, where it has been applied in different applications [ 69 , 70 , 71 ], including the use of QCM resonators as humidity sensors [ 31 , 32 , 33 ]. On the other hand, various attempts have been made by researchers to maintain conventional analyzers advantages while developing compact systems.…”

“…More specifically, polymers are becoming key for developing such composite materials due to their low cost, ease of synthesis and interesting properties such as viscoelasticity or versatility in composition. 13,14 In fact, thanks to the many available monomers, the choice of possible polymers is vast, and the same applies for the resulting nanocomposites. Additionally, the use of polymer can simplify the ability to pattern metallic nanoparticles by an in-situ cation reduction approach.…”
