Hydration and Interfacial Water in Nafion Membrane Probed by Transmission Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract: Infrared spectroscopy was applied to probe water inside pores and channels of Nafion membrane exchanged with either proton (H+) or sodium ions (Na+). Transmission measurements were performed on freestanding Nafion 112 (approximately 50 microm thickness) in a cell that enabled adjustment of the relative humidity. Experiments that employed Na+-exchanged Nafion focused on relative humidity environments at or below about 32% generated through the use of humectants. Under these conditions, narrow features in the O-… Show more

“…However, the dehydration of a membrane depends not only on the heating tem-perature but also on the thickness of the membrane. In our case, the membrane is much thinner than the membrane reported in the literature [24]. There is a possibility for the dehumidification of the membrane satisfactorily at 80°C.…”

“…The protonated sulphonic acid groups can only be observed if the membranes were dehydrated. The temperature applied for the dehydration of a thick membrane is 95°C [24]. However, the dehydration of a membrane depends not only on the heating tem-perature but also on the thickness of the membrane.…”

“…A drawing of a transmission cell configured for use with freestanding membrane is shown in Figure 12.1. Components stack inside an aluminum ring attached to the backplate of a commercial infrared transmission cell [20,29,30]. The windows are held parallel in the cell and separated a fixed distance ($1 cm) by a pair of spacers.…”

“…Spectral bands of Nafion and imbibed water are sensitive to the hydration level and nature of the cation exchanged into the membrane [9,10,17,19,20,24,[26][27][28][29][30][47][48][49][50]. Traditional assignments for the main Nafion polymer bands are summarized in [51].…”
