Hybrid Tamm-surface plasmon polariton mode for highly sensitive detection of protein interactions

Abstract: The total internal reflection ellipsometry (TIRE) method was used for the excitation and study of the sensitivity properties of the hybrid Tamm plasmon polariton – surface plasmon polariton (TPP-SPP) and single surface plasmon resonance (SPR) modes of the GCSF receptor immobilization. Additionally, the optimized sensitivity of the hybrid TPP-SPP mode was investigated and compared with the single SPR mode when the BSA proteins formed a layer on the gold surface. The dispersion relations for the hybrid TPP-SPP a… Show more

“…Similar arrangement has been indicated by AFM measurements of BSA adsorbed on diamond surfaces [ 26 ] as well as from surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy on gold surfaces where BSA was immobilized by mercaptoundecanoic acid. [ 32 ] The small thickness of 2 nm, compared to 6 nm observed by the SPR for BSA on gold, [ 32 ] also suggests that BSA is in addition significantly collapsed (denatured) as found for proteins on hydrophobic surfaces. [ 14 ] Also Raman spectra of BSA in the presence of ZnO nanoparticles indicated decreased α‐helix content, increased unstructured folding and β‐sheet content in BSA molecule.…”

“…Lastly, we also calculated the reflectance spectrum of the "Ag layer + RF" system using Equation (13), slightly going beyond the conditions in Equation (6) for applicability of the obtained analytical solution. For this, we set the magnitude of the RF refractive index modulation to be n p = 0.5.…”

“…TPPs manifest themselves optically in the form of narrow dips/peaks in the reflection/transmission spectra in the spectral region corresponding to the photonic band gap of the Bragg mirror. TPPs are a good alternative to conventional surface plasmons, with potential applications for sensors [8][9][10][11][12][13][14], Tamm plasmon-based lasers [15][16][17], optical switches and filters [18][19][20], liquid crystal-tuned Tamm plasmon devices [21][22][23], and selective thermal and light emitters [24][25][26][27][28].…”
