Hybrid Simultaneous Treatment of Thrombosed Prosthetic Grafts for Hemodialysis

Abstract: In our series the combined simultaneous hybrid approach in urgency maximizes the use of different available techniques, which appeared to improve overall success rate to save a thrombosed graft for hemodialysis. The great difference showed between primary and primary assisted patency demonstrates the necessity of a close follow-up.

“…All hemodialysis accesses inevitably fail with time (7). Restoration of thrombosed and dysfunctional hemodialysis access can be achieved with image-guided percutaneous interventional procedures, surgery, or a combination of these methods (2,8). Endovascular management has replaced open surgery as the first line of therapy for dysfunctional and thrombosed dialysis accesses where possible (9).…”

“…Cutting balloon angioplasty is a safe and effective treatment of graft to vein anastomotic stenosis, with significantly higher patency than that of conventional balloon angioplasty [225]. From the point of view of Troisi et al [226], the combined simultaneous hybrid (open and endovascular) approach in urgency maximizes the use of different available techniques, improving overall success rate to save a thrombosed graft.…”
