Hybrid Simulation: Historical lessons, present challenges and futures

Abstract: Hybrid simulation comes in many shapes and forms. It has been argued by many researchers that hybrid simulation provides a better insight of the system in hand as it allows modelers to assess its inherent problems from different dimensions. As a result Hybrid Simulation is becoming an important field within the Modeling and Simulation arena. Yet we find that there no clear and cohesive definition for it. Therefore, this panel paper aims to explore the concept of Hybrid Simulation and its progression through th… Show more

“…And it is true that the majority of papers referring to hybrid simulation focus on the model implementation phase of a simulation study. 10,40,41,43 The latter deploys the use of interdisciplinary methods and comprises several stages other than implementation, concerned with problem formulation stage/conceptual modeling, data collection, validation and verification, model execution, data analysis, etc. 44 Even if, in the last years, hybrid simulation has been mostly used in specific fields such as healthcare, 43 other fields could benefit from its application, for example, production planning, 45 operations research, 42 biological systems, 46 and computer systems.…”

“…As in every simulation, appropriate verification and validation techniques need to be used. 10 Another aspect that must be considered is usability. It is well known that PADS technologies, after many years of research and development, still have usability issues.…”

“…Unfortunately, the SD-DES hybrid modelling frameworks that have been advanced previously by others are not so easy to replicate in situations other than where they were promoted because of their problem/context-specific approach (Chahal et al, 2013). Most attempts seem to have been ad-hoc with no clear methodology (Eldabi et al, 2016). To this end, the remainder of this document is structured as follows: section two provides background information about the LM system case; in section three a SD-DES hybrid SM concept is designed, presented and applied to the case; section four discusses the academic and practical implications of the study while section five concludes with future outlook.…”

“…The use of a hybrid modeling approach to solving complex real-world problems has gained popularity among simulation researchers and practitioners (Mustafee et al 2017;Eldabi et al 2016). This stems from the realization that a single modeling approach is bound by its underlying methodological constraints, and with systems becoming more complex and multi-faceted, there is now a need to use a combination of analytical approaches to best represent the system of interest.…”
