The masses of 1 −− charmonium and bottomonium hybrids are evaluated in terms of QCD sum rules. We find that the ground state hybrid in charm sector lies in m Hc = 4.12 ∼ 4.79 GeV, while in bottom sector the hybrid may situated in m H b = 10.24 ∼ 11.15 GeV. Since the numerical result on charmonium hybrid mass is not compatible with the charmonium spectra, including structures newly observed in experiment, we tempt to conclude that such a hybrid does not purely exist, but rather as an admixture with other states, like glueball and regular quarkonium, in experimental observation. However, our result on bottomonium hybrid coincide with the "exotic structure" recently observed at BELLE.

In the past decade many charmonium-like states were observed experimentally. Especially those charged charmoniumlike Z c states and bottomonium-like Z b states can not be accommodated within the naive quark model. These charged Z c states are good candidates of either the hidden-charm tetraquark states or molecules composed of a pair of charmed mesons. Recently, the LHCb Collaboration discovered two hidden-charm pentaquark states, which are also beyond the quark model. In this work, we review the current experimental progress and investigate various theoretical interpretations of these candidates of the multiquark states. We list the puzzles and theoretical challenges of these models when confronted with the experimental data. We also discuss possible future measurements which may distinguish the theoretical schemes on the underlying structures of the hidden-charm multiquark states.

In this pedagogical review we discuss the theoretical understanding of light hadron spectroscopy in terms of QCD and the quark model. We begin with a summary of the known and surmised properties of QCD and confinement. Following this we review the nonrelativistic quark potential model for qij mesons and discuss the quarkonium spectrum and methods for identifying qq states. Finally we review theoretical expectations for non-qij states (glueballs, hybrids and multiquark systems) and the status of experimental candidates for these states.
