Hybrid porous polymers constructed from octavinylsilsesquioxane and benzene via Friedel–Crafts reaction: tunable porosity, gas sorption, and postfunctionalization

Abstract: Based on the multi-reaction sites of benzene in the Friedel–Crafts reaction with octavinylsilsesquioxane, hybrid polymers with tunable porosity were prepared.

“…Compared with Heck reactions, Friedel-Crafts reactions require relatively mild conditions and low-cost catalysts, but still achieve high efficiency. [30,31] Although many porous materials have been prepared through the application of Friedel-Crafts reactions, [14,32] this remains a relatively unexplored area. TPS, as a rigid silicon-centered monomer, is not commonly used to prepare porous materials.…”

“…Benzene was chosen in one report as a planar molecule to react with cubic OVS to produce porous hybrid polymers with an S BET of up to 904 m 2 g -1 through the Friedel-Crafts reaction; however, the pore-size distribution of the product was wide and irregular. [32] Clearly, modern applications require materials with regular and narrow pore-size distribution in addition to high surface areas. As a rigid tetrahedral building block, TPS would play different roles compared with benzene in the preparation of hybrid networks.…”

“…The adsorption capacity of CO 2 is also comparable to that of some metal-organic framework materials and SQ-based porous materials at the same measured pressure. [50,14,51] Therefore, porous cage polymer 1 is Figure 10. CO 2 adsorption isotherm of cage polymer 1 at 273 K and 101 kPa.…”
