Hybrid Polyester Coating Incorporating Functionalized Mesoporous Carriers for the Holistic Protection of Steel Surfaces

Abstract: Hybrid coatings are formed by dispersing inhibitor (benzotriazole) containing functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles throughout a polyester primer. They outperform the primer in corrosion tests both when intact and scratched. Adding the inhibitor directly (without encapsulation into nanoparticles) is found to be less effective. Given the afforded holistic protection, these hybrid coatings represent an excellent model for future coating design.

“…catalysis, drug delivery, chromatography, corrosion inhibition), almost all of the preparation methods suffer the requirement of templating species, hightemperature syntheses or high shear pre-emulsification. [4][5][6][7] A spontaneous emulsification-based route to form porous materials would be cheap, simple, non-hazardous and therefore warrants further consideration. One way to functionalise the resultant particles (e.g.…”

“…Corrosion inhibitor-containing capsules dispersed throughout a passive coating matrix have been reported that provide protection to both aluminium AA2024-T3 19 and galvanized steel. 6 Inhibitor release is thought to be directed by the change in local electrochemical potential (e.g. local pH) around the corrosion site.…”

“…131 Containers with polymeric shells of significant polarity such as PU, polyurea (PUa), and polyamides, are well-dispersible in media with high to moderate polarity because of their essential surface charge stabilizing containers from coagulation. Most frequently, substances having the surface activity are used for this purpose including ionic, nonionic and polymeric surfactants.…”

“…A challenge to this approach is that, for many corrosion applications, healing must be possible in high humidity or underwater environments. Nevertheless, many chemistries have demonstrated preliminary success in healing of coatings including poly(dimethylsiloxane),2 epoxy,3 benzotriazole,4 alkoxysilanes,5 tung oil,6 linseed oil,7 and silyl ester 8. A somewhat different approach to healing coatings takes advantage of coaxial electrospinning to form self‐healing coatings 9.…”
