Bioprocesses can be hampered by product concentrations within a fermentation leading to product‐inhibition, and reductions in yield and productivity. This limitation impacts operational considerations, process economics, and viability, and, ultimately, whether a technology is industrially viable. One approach to circumventing these concerns is in situ extraction of products. In this way, the organism is no longer exposed to the inhibitory product, and fermentation can proceed, often at improved rates. Significant advances in this field have been made in recent years, however, they are for the most part siloed into sub‐fields (focusing on the product extracted, or the method of extraction). This review considers in situ extraction more holistically in terms of i) the separation methodology, ii) the mode of reactor operation, and iii) the physical reactor configuration. The summary hopes to give insight into promising areas for research and potentially spark ideas for novel in situ extractive processes.

In recent decades, pervaporation membrane separation coupled with fermentation is recognized as a promising process in biofuel production. This review presents the latest progress in membrane materials applied for the biobutanol separation from dilute aqueous solution or fermentation broth. It also summarizes various membrane-based separation processes for in situ recovering biobutanol during the fermentation. Opportunities and challenges in future development of pervaporation organophilic membrane materials and fermentation coupled processes for biobutanol production are outlook.

Purification of Pharmaceutical Solvents by Pervaporation through Hybrid Silica Membranes

Solvents purification mainly used in pharmaceutical field such as acetone and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) were performed through hybrid silica membranes and from binary and multi-components mixtures. Two hybrid silica membranes—zirconia doped bis(triethoxysilyl)methane and bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE)—were studied. Flux, permeance, and separation factor were evaluated depending on temperature, composition, and number of organic compounds in the feed. Dehydration tests of acetone were operated at 30 and 45 °C following by acetone and MEK purification at 50 °C from multi-components hydro-organic mixtures where hydrophilic compounds (water, methanol) but also hydrophobic (dichloromethane (DCM) and/or toluene) were present. Results showed that the presence of Zr nanoparticles affected flux and improved selectivity in the case of dehydration. Experiments related to acetone and MEK purification, revealed a mass transfer alteration and a decrease of performance, from 99 to 97 wt% and from 98 to 95 wt% respectively, when the number of compounds in the initial feed grown up and more precisely, in the presence of DCM and toluene thus highlighting a possible coupling effect.
