Hybrid nanoporous polystyrene derived from cubic octavinylsilsesquioxane and commercial polystyrene via the Friedel–Crafts reaction

Abstract: A series of hybrid nanoporous polystyrenes were synthesized from commercial polystyrene (PS) and cubic octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) via the Friedel-Crafts reaction. The porosity of the resulting hybrid polymers could be fine-tuned by varying the ratio of PS and OVS. The resulting polymers, HCP-1 to HCP-9 had apparent Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas (S BET ) in a range of 2.6 to 767 m 2 g À1 , with total pore volumes in the range of 0.36 to 0.90 cm 3 g À1 . The S BET was maximum when OVS loading was 9.1 w… Show more

“…Two peaks appeared at 17.8 and 38.6 ppm, corresponding to the methylene carbons of Si‐ C H 2 ‐CH 2 ‐Fc or Si‐CH 2 ‐ C H 2 ‐Fc, respectively; the peaks at 49.5 and 12.8 ppm should be assigned to the methine carbon of Si‐ C H(CH 3 )‐Fc and methyl carbon of Si‐CH( C H 3 )‐Fc, respectively. This result indicated that the generation of regioisomers occurred in the Friedel–Crafts reaction . The most intense peak at 68.1 ppm was ascribed to the signal of the dicyclopentadienyl carbons, indicating the successful introduction of ferrocene units into the network .…”

“…These porous polymers possessed good thermal stability and exhibited high thermal decomposition temperature. 32,37,48 The crystallographic order of these hybrid porous polymers was investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis. 6), which were signicantly higher than those of OVS, TPP and TPPO.…”

“…POSS crosslinks might dominate in the resulting polymer networks when Vinyl‐POSS acts as the host, which leads to large surface area and the pore volume. The observed variations in surface area and the pore volume are consistent with a recent report …”
