Hybrid multi-plate magnetorheological clutch featuring two operating modes: Fluid coupling and mechanical friction

Abstract: Recently, there has been a rising demand for high-performance clutches in mechanical systems owing to the development of industrial technologies. This paper, therefore, proposes a hybrid multi-plate Magnetorheological (MR) clutch that has both fluid coupling and mechanical friction modes. To reduce impact when the plates are in contact with each other, a fluid coupler’s operating mode was used at the beginning of the clutch operation. For this, torque modeling in each mode was induced based on the Bingham mode… Show more

“…The viscosity coefficient can be obtained through the saturated viscosity coefficient η ∞ , the natural viscosity coefficient η 0 , and the viscosity coefficient saturation moment σ Sη in the Y term of Equation (3). The yield stress can be obtained through the saturated yield stress τ y∞ , the natural yield stress τ y0 , and the yield saturation in the Y term can be obtained with the saturation moment σ Sτ y [19]. Friction clutches create power transmission through engagement between the disc and the plate that connect the power and the load.…”

“…MR fluids typically contain range of 20-80 wt% of carbonyl iron and range of 1-3 wt% of fumed silica in the literature [3,5]. Looking at the studies, MR fluids are used in automotive suspension [6][7][8], brake [9][10][11] and clutch [12,13] systems. There are many studies in the literature about its use, especially in semi-active suspension systems.…”

“…MR fluid (MRF) changes from liquid state to solid-like state reversely under external magnetic fields with milliseconds [2,3]. Due to significant advantages like large damping force [4], controllability [5] and fast response properties of MR elastomer can be changed dynamically by external magnetic fields [15]. The nature frequency of selfprepared anisotropic MR elastomer was increased by 507% [16].…”
