Hybrid Multi-Channel MAC Protocol for WBANs with Inter-WBAN Interference Mitigation

Abstract: Herein, we propose a hybrid multi-channel medium access control (HM-MAC) protocol for wireless body area networks (WBANs) that mitigates inter-WBAN interference significantly. In HM-MAC, a superframe consists of a random access phase and a scheduled access phase. That is, a carrier sensing multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) phase and a time division multiple access (TDMA) phase are included in a superframe. The random access phase allows higher-priority users to transmit data packets with low l… Show more

“…Therefore, it is essential to manage the distributed nodes to the correct channel [8]. There are other challenges to designing the multi-channel protocols for the MAC sub-layer of LLNs including [9]: multi-channel hidden terminal, absent receiver (no listening), broadcast support, delayed channel switch, optimum allocation of channels to nodes, connecting a new node to the network and avoiding network partitioning [10]. Based on the aforementioned, other researchers manage the problem of package collision in the network-by-network layer solutions [11], [12].…”

“…The interference of communication between the coordinator and the server can be solved by using the existing WAN technology and cellular technology. This paper mainly analyses the interference from the neighbour WBANs in the communication between the wireless sensor nodes, the node, and the coordinator, which is worn or implanted when multiple WBANs are present in the area [25][26][27]. In this paper, the neighbour table is established by beacons and the disturbance mitigation method based on the reservation is studied, and how to avoid a collision caused by an incomplete neighbour table is considered [28][29][30][31].…”

“…So networks with low latency and higher reliability are highly demanded in such a situation to avoid collisions and interference between WBAN coexistence. In [30], the authors proposed a hybrid multichannel MAC protocol to improve network throughput. The algorithm integrates carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) with TDMA MAC to distinguish network resources for random access from periodic data, respectively.…”
