Hybrid laser pointer detection algorithm based on template matching and fuzzy rule-based systems for domotic control in real home environments

Abstract: A fundamental problem for disabled or elderly people is to manage their homes while carrying out an almost normal life, which implies using and interacting with a number of home devices. Recent studies in smart homes have proposed methods to use a laser pointer for interacting with home devices, which represents a more user-friendly and less expensive home device control environment. However, detecting the laser spot on the original non-filtered images, using standard and non-expensive cameras, and considering… Show more

“…They usually have two characteristics: the need for human operator experience, and a strong non-linearity. Nowadays, there are many real-world applications of FLCs such as mobile robot navigation 4,5 , air conditioning controllers 6,7 , domotic control 8,9 , and industrial applications 10,11,12 .…”

“…In this event, a wrong order is sent to the domotic system which could provoke undesirable, dangerous or at least unexpected, situations. For this reason, in 16 we presented a new approach hybridizing a classic technique with the use of a Fuzzy Rule-Based System (FRBS) designed using expert knowledge 3 , 45 , 46 to try to improve the success rate in images without laser spots. Further, this initial FRBS was tuned in 15 by means of a Genetic Algorithm (GA), in order to improve the success rate in images without laser spots.…”

“…In this paper, we present a new approach to detect the laser spot in the environment device control system presented in 15 and 16 by considering the color influence in laser spot detection and using a simple automatic Rule Base (RB) generation. This method solves the problems that the approaches proposed in 15 and 16 present when dealing with new situations as a consequence of extending the set of available example images from 105 in 15 , 16 to 990.…”
