Hybrid Intelligent System to Perform Fault Detection on BIS Sensor During Surgeries

Abstract: This paper presents a new fault detection system in hypnotic sensors used for general anesthesia during surgery. Drug infusion during surgery is based on information received from patient monitoring devices; accordingly, faults in sensor devices can put patient safety at risk. Our research offers a solution to cope with these undesirable scenarios. We focus on the anesthesia process using intravenous propofol as the hypnotic drug and employing a Bispectral Index (BISTM) monitor to estimate the patient’s uncons… Show more

“…Dividing the initial dataset into different groups before carrying out the regression could be a complementary solution [21,22]. With this objective in mind, the clustering algorithm -means is commonly used [23][24][25]. This method consists of splitting up the entire dataset into a number of clusters.…”

“…where→ y is the dependent variable predicted by the MARS model, c 0 is a constant, B m (x) is the mathematical base function, which can be a simple spline base function, and c m is the coefficient of the mathematical base function. The MARS technique builds its model in two stages, the "step forward" and the "step back" [17][18][19]. In reference to the "step forward", MARS begins with a model containing only the intercept term, which is the mean of the response values.…”

“…However, despite the intelligent systems use, bad performance could be possible, if the nonlinearities are several. If it is the case, then, a hybrid system based on clustering techniques, previous to the regression step, frequently gives satisfactory results [28].…”
