Hybrid gate dielectrics: a comparative study between polyvinyl alcohol/ $$\hbox {SiO}_{2}$$ SiO 2 nanocomposite and pure polyvinyl alcohol thin-film transistors

Abstract: Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin films as polymer gate dielectrics, with and without SiO 2 nanoparticles were fabricated using spin-coating. Surface roughness and hydrophilicity of PVA and PVA/SiO 2 thin films were studied by contact-angle measurements and atomic force microscopy. The dielectric properties were characterized via capacitance and leakage-current measurements on metal-insulator-metal structures. In order to further investigate the application potential of such materials as a replacement for conventio… Show more

“…Afsharimani et al reported the addition of SiO 2 NPs into the polymer PVA in order to modify its dielectric properties, for application in α,ω-dihexylquaterthiophene (DH4T) based transistor fabrication [80]. Two types of dielectric layers were used in this study including the pure PVA film and PVA/SiO 2 NPs hybrid film.…”

“…The device also can be peeled off. Furthermore, Afsharimani and Nysten [39] prepared PVA thin films by spin-coating and utilized them as polymer gate dielectrics to fabricate transistors. The transistors show ambipolar behavior with hole and electron mobilities in a low voltage range, indicating a promising potential future in dielectrics.…”

“…Regarding dielectric polymers, adding a small amount of nanofillers into them to prepare nanocomposites would further enhance their dielectric performance. The chemical structure, surface morphology, and preparation method, as well as the additives, all have an effect on the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites [39,181,182,183]. Conductive and high dielectric constant nanofillers, such as CNTs, GO, Al 2 O 3 , and SiO 2 , all have the potential to improve dielectric performance.…”

“…The dissociation of C n H 2n+1 OH adsorption on the Si (111)-7 × 7 surface is a prominent example, where the new bonds (Si-H) and (Si-C n H 2n+1 O) are formed by the reaction between the alcohol gases and Si atoms. After comparing the dissociation process in detail, the influence of CH 3 OH adsorption on different metal atomic structures was explored gradually [16][17][18][19]. Further, with our understanding of some typical metal depositions, they can also be used to explore the characteristics of alcohol adsorption.…”
