Hybrid Frequency and Phase-Shift Keying Modulation for Energy Efficient Optical Wireless Systems

Abstract: In this letter, we introduce direct-current (DC) offset hybrid frequency and phase-shift keying (DC-FPSK) modulation for Internet-of-Things based on optical wireless systems. For DC-FPSK, non-negative phase-modulated frequency waveforms are generated by combining frequency-shift keying (FSK), phase-shift keying (PSK) and a DC offset. We propose optimal maximum likelihood and sub-optimal receivers for DC-FPSK. The performance is appraised in terms of Euclidean distance, bit-errorrate (BER) performance and energ… Show more

“…The number of bits, λ transmitted per EO-OFDM-DM symbol of duration T s is given by (35), which results in a data rate of R = λ/T s . Moreover, the base-band bandwidth needed by EO-OFDM-DM is same as that of EO-OFDM-IM, which is given by (19). Thus, the SE η = R/B for EO-OFDM-DM in bits/s/Hz is…”

“…Frequency and phase-shift synthesis modulation technology (FPSSM) is widely used in aviation, wireless communication, and other fields. Azim et al [9] utilize FPSSM technology for energy-efficient optical wireless systems with direct current (DC) offset hybrid frequency and phase shift keying (DC-FPSK) modulation for Internet-of-Things based on optical wireless systems resulting in higher modulation rates and greater flexibility. An FPSSM signal optical generation technique is proposed in [10], which uses a polarization-preserving fiber Bragg grating with different responses to different input polarization states to convert the baseband information loaded into the signal polarization state to that of the output wavelength, and achieves frequency modulation by interpolation of the beat frequency at the receiver side.…”

“…Though U-FSK is spectrally less efficient than DC-FSK, it yields higher energy efficiency. We refer interested readers to [2], [3], [4] for a detailed description of various FSK schemes and their generalizations for VLC. In this work, we shall restrain our discussion to only U-FSK.…”
