Hybrid calcium carbonate/polymer microparticles containing silver nanoparticles as antibacterial agents

Abstract: We report here on synthesis and characterization of novel hybrid material consisting of silver nanoparticles (nAgs) embedded in calcium carbonate microparticles (μ-CaCO3) serving as carriers for sustained release. nAgs are commonly used as antimicrobial agents in many commercial products (textiles, cosmetics, and drugs). Although they are considered to be safe, their interactions with human organisms are still not fully understood; therefore it is important to apply them with caution and limit their presence i… Show more

“…Polymers such as polyaniline, polystyrene, glycopolymers of polyacrylamide derivatives with mannose, poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate), polyurethane (PU) were modified by Au-NPs and Ag-NPs [10,[29][30][31][32][33][34][35]. Novel and feature properties of modified polymers were observed.…”

“…70 The FDA has approved the use of CaCO 3 (without specifying its polymorphism) as a food additive ( §582.1191), a dietary supplement ( §582.5191), a direct food substance ( §184.1191), and a colour additive for food ( §73. 70 to macromolecules (proteins, 77,81,82 growth factors, 83 genes 84,85 ) and inorganic nanoparticles (Ag, 86 ). Importantly, multicomponent encapsulation into VCC is also possible and has been reported (e.g.…”

“…The resulting composite Ag-NPs/CaCO 3 particles showed significant antimicrobial activity. It was also tested for an additive of a commercial paint [21]. Novel hybrid antibacterial microparticles, Ag-NPs/ CaCO 3 , consisting of Ag-NPs incorporated into calcium carbonate/polymer microparticles of CaCO 3 , were obtained in a simple synthetic procedure carried out in aqueous environment and involving non-toxic compounds [22].…”
