Abstract:Populations no longer experiencing a sufficient rate of gene flow will accumulate genetic differences over time. One potential consequence of divergence between natural populations is hybrid breakdown, which can occur during secondary contact when untested allelic combinations in hybrids beyond the F1 generation are maladaptive and restrict gene flow. Hybrid breakdown is an important process in the development and maintenance of species boundaries, and has largely been studied between populations that are comp… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
