Hyaluronic Acid Methacrylate Hydrogel-Modified Electrochemical Device for Adsorptive Removal of Lead(II)

Abstract: This paper presents the development of a compact, three-electrode electrochemical device functionalized by a biocompatible layer of hyaluronic acid methacrylate (HAMA) hydrogel for the adsorptive removal of detrimental lead (Pb(II)) ions in aqueous solutions. An adsorption mechanism pertaining to the observed analytical performance of the device is proposed and further experimentally corroborated. It is demonstrated that both the molecular interactions originating from the HAMA hydrogel and electrochemical acc… Show more

“…The as-synthesized Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -HA microspheres can be used as an effective adsorbent for the removal of copper ions from an aqueous solution [ 77 ]. Wang investigated the efficacy of a hydrogel composed of hyaluronic acid methacrylate (HAMA) for the adsorptive removal of lead (Pb(II)) ions from aqueous solutions [ 78 ]. A suggested adsorption mechanism was presented, which was associated with the reported analytical performance of the device.…”

“…As three-dimensional materials, hydrogels have excellent properties such as large specific surface area, high porosity, and excellent water absorption, which give them great potential for application in the field of wastewater purification [34,35]. There are many kinds of hydrogels, such as chitosan-based hydrogels [36,37], cellulose-based hydrogels [38,39], hyaluronic acid hydrogels [40,41], pectin hydrogels [42], etc. However, it is difficult for hydrogels prepared with a single material to meet application needs.…”

“…Lead is one of the toxic metals and is discharged from different industrial activities such as mining, metals production, battery industry, and fuels combustion [5][6][7]. Lead's existence in water recourses can cause different diseases such as hepatitis and anemia [8][9][10][11]. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline 2017, the maximum acceptable concentration for lead in drinking water is 0.01 mg/L [12][13][14].…”
