Hvem holder Norge rent? Renholdsbransjen og arbeidsstyrkens særtrekk – segmentert og kjønnet arbeid

Abstract

This chapter uses administrative register data to look at who is working in the Norwegian cleaning industry. The chapter presents an overview of the industry in Norway’s three largest cities and differences in the industry’s workforces in each city. As the cleaning industry is characterized by a large proportion of migrant employees, country of origin and reason for immigration are included. The main findings are that cleaning work still is feminized and ethnic work (despite earlier research that emphasized how men are taking over), although this varies between the cities. The chapter determines that Oslo is a special case when it comes to labor market dynamics in Norway and not necessarily a front-runner. With this as a backdrop, the chapter discusses the cleaning industry workforce’s relation to Norwegian working life, precarious work, and its consequences.
