Hürthle cell adenoma arising in a thyroglossal duct cyst

Abstract: A 18-year-old black woman was initially seen with a 1-year history of a slowly enlarging midline neck mass. On physical examination this was consistent with a thyroglossal duct cyst. Histologic examination following a Sistrunk procedure revealed a Hürthle cell adenoma arising in a thyroglossal duct cyst. This is the second reported case of a Hürthle cell adenoma arising in a thyroglossal duct cyst. Neoplasms of thyroglossal duct cysts are reviewed.

“… 13 and Lyos et al . 14 each reported a case of Hürthle cell adenoma, while Adler and Freeman 15 reported a case of Hürthle cell carcinoma with frank vascular invasion. Our case is the third reported case of a Hürthle cell adenoma arising in a thyroglossal duct cyst, and is the first known case of Hürthle cell adenoma of the thyroglossal duct fistula.…”

“…Analogous to the currently preferred conservative management of thyroid tumors, the Sistrunk procedure, 16 with resection of the thyroglossal duct cyst, central portion of the hyoid, and thyroglossal duct to the foramen cecum at the base of the tongue, is well accepted, and has demonstrated success with a low recurrence rate. 14 …”
