В этой статье рассматривается академический «жизненный путь» антрополога-коммуниста Фредерика Джорджа Годфри (Фреда) Роуза (1915–1991), биография которого была опубликована в 2015 г. Она написана в виде микроистории академической среды социалистических стран, частью которой был Роуз во время холодной войны в 1956–1989 годы. В свете недавних публикаций в России стали более понятны направления, по которым развивалась советская этнография в то время, и возникли новые вопросы о некоторых архивных пробелах и пропусках в документах Роуза. Недоверие и слежка были широко распространены в советских академических учреждениях, поэтому, будучи чужаком с Запада, Роуз использовал «тактический» подход, чтобы совместить академическую карьеру с личной преданностью марксизму в условиях коммунистической диктатуры, где официальной государственной идеологией была доктрина, известная как «марксизм-ленинизм».
