The end of the asylum era in Central-Eastern Europe

“…In the last 25 years, hundreds of scientific papers by Institute staff were published in prestigious international journals on: mood disorders and suicide (Arató et al, 1988;Rihmer, 2007;Rihmer et al, 1990); psychiatric epidemiology (Szádóczky et al, 1998); social psychiatry (Füredi et al, 1993); epilepsy and sleep (Halász et al, 2004); stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases (Nagy et al, 2006); neuropathology (Kovács et al, 2005); basic neurosciences (Adori et al, 2006); and molecular genetics (Gonda et al, 2006). These developments all came to an abrupt and enforced end, as a result of a depressed economy and a misguided mental health policy.…”
