Humoral Immune Response of Ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis to Glugea plecoglossi (Protozoa: Microspora).

Abstract: The humoral immune response of ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) to the microsporidian parasite Glugea plecoglossi was investigated. The antibody levels of sera from ayu, to which G. plecoglossi spores were administered orally, were measured by indirct ELISA. While the cysts appeared from 27 D.P.I. (days post-infection), the antibodies against the intact spores were first detected at 10 D.P.I. and no more significant increases in the antibody levels were observed. The uptake of spores through the gut epithelium was… Show more

“…This suggests that a specific humoral immune response of E. akaara was elicited by infection with G. epinephelusis and the intensity of the infection was not related to the antibody level in naturally infected grouper using intact mature spores as a coated antigen. It is similar to that reported by Kim et al (1996).…”

“…Much work has been done to determine the immune response of fish against microsporidians, and 2 distinct views have emerged. Some authors believe that fish infected by microsporidians can generated a specific immune response against the pathogen (Leiro et al 1993, Hung et al 1996, Kim et al 1996. However, it was also widely accepted that the parasite can evade the host's immune defense mechanism by mimicing or adsorbing host antigens, which can result in immunosuppression of the host for other pathogens (Laudan et al 1986, 1987, Wongtavatchai et al 1995, Kim et al 1998.…”

“…In some cases, the antibody (Ab) response is well established and it has a protective role, while in other situations, the humoral response is not protective or it is depressed [65]. A few studies have established that fish can produce specific Ab in response to microsporidians.…”

“…Infection with Glugea plecoglossi is thought to be endemic in ayu from Lake Biwa (Takahashi, 1980 ELISA ELISA was conducted and antibody units were calcu lated from the means of the optical density as described previously (Kim et al, 1996).…”
