Humoral and Cellular Immunity to Candida albicans in Patients with Bronchial Asthma.

Abstract: Delayed cutaneous reactivity to Candida albicans (C. albicans) and PPD (purified protein derivative) was examined in 52 patients with bronchial asthma in relation to the production of specific IgG4 antibodies against the antigen. 1. The frequency of a positive, immediate skin reaction to C. albicans was similar among the five age groups, ranging from 60.0% to 66.7%. 2. The incidence of a positive delayed skin reaction to C. albicans was lower in patients between the ages of 10 and 30 and tended to decrease wit… Show more

“…C. albicans blastoconidia were labeled with 51 Cr (Na 2 CrO 4 ) for 1 h at 37°C at a concentration of 100 Ci per 10 8 cells. The blastoconidia were then washed three times and used as the targets.…”

“…The blastoconidia were then washed three times and used as the targets. The effectors were suspended in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with 2% fetal bovine serum, and the effectors, neutrophils or macrophages, were mixed with the 51 Cr-labeled blastoconidia to give an effector/target ratio of 1:10 in a final volume of 0.2 ml/flatbottom well. The mixtures were then incubated for 4 h at 37°C, and the isotope activity in 0.1 ml of the supernatant from each well was counted with a gamma counter.…”

“…Thus, the remaining 14 articles for our analysis were written in Russian, Japanese, and English and were conducted in Russia, Japan, and Italy (Tables 3 and 4; See: Supplementary materials). As a measure of the effect, the standardized difference in mean values (Hedge's g) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using a random effects model.…”
