Humidity-Induced Structural Transformation in Pseudopolymorph Coordination Polymers

Abstract: Three cadmium coordination polymers, namely, { [CdL-(OAc) and [CdL-(OAc) 2 (H 2 O)] n (3), were synthesized by an exoditopic 1,4-bis(4pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene Schiff base ligand (L) and cadmium acetate in the presence of different solvent systems. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis showed that 1D ladder pseudopolymorphic compounds (1 and 2) transformed to the solvent-free 1D linear compound 3 through a rare case of water absorption from air at … Show more

“…Transformations of coordination polymers are commonly divided into two types: namely, solid-state structural transformation (SSST) [11][12][13] and dissolution-recrystallization structural transformation (DRST). 30 Single-crystal-to-singlecrystal (SCSC) [11][12][13]15 transformations are one kind of common transformation in SSST, for sustaining macroscopic integrity during reactions. Complex 1, containing weakly bound methanol molecules at lattice positions, undergoes selective solvent (methanol) induced structural transformation to shrink a single crystal of complex 1a at room temperature (25 °C) by molecular rearrangement in the solid state.…”

“…In this context, dynamic or soft porous networks of MOFs have generated interest for the development of new materials for selective gas sorption and separation. 10 For dynamic porous network SCSC, 15 transformation generally occurs through external stimuli, like temperature, light and exchange of ions or solvent. 16,18 The exchange or elimination of guest solvent molecules [19][20][21][22][23] may transform the structure due to various factors like the breathing effect, 24 sliding between layers, 25 variation of the packing mode, change in the spatial group and symmetry or redistribution of the pores in the network.…”

“…The coordination, supramolecular interactions, and/or polarity of the solvent molecules usually lead to DRSTs. These differences generally result in changes in the coordination number, geometry, or dimensionality of the resulting CPs. Nonetheless, structural transformations of the SBUs are relatively scarce, , and to the best of our knowledge, no examples of CPs presenting multiple alterations of its initial SBU by DRSTs can be found in the literature.…”
