Humic Substances as Microalgal Biostimulants—Implications for Microalgal Biotechnology

Abstract: Humic substances (HS) act as biostimulants for terrestrial photosynthetic organisms. Their effects on plants are related to specific HS features: pH and redox buffering activities, (pseudo)emulsifying and surfactant characteristics, capacity to bind metallic ions and to encapsulate labile hydrophobic molecules, ability to adsorb to the wall structures of cells. The specific properties of HS result from the complexity of their supramolecular structure. This structure is more dynamic in aqueous solutions/suspens… Show more

“…The pedo-climatic conditions and anthropogenic activities have a significant impact on the elemental composition and, as a result, the functional groups [52]. The bioactivity of HSs structures associated with their complexity has both been extensively discussed [4,14,17,20,[53][54][55]. The theories of HSs molecular and supramolecular structures have been established in recent investigations.…”

“…Another paper labelled HSs as biostimulants for terrestrial photosynthetic organisms. Their effects on plants are related to specific HSs features such as: pH and redox buffering activities, (pseudo)emulsifying and surfactant characteristics, capacity to bind metallic ions and to encapsulate labile hydrophobic molecules, ability to adsorb to the wall structures of cells [17]. Da Silva et al (2021) state that HSs are promising options for reducing the use of pesticides and mineral fertilizers [18].…”

“…Another kind of biostimulants are the humic substances (HS) that comprise humic and fulvic acids, and they are the main components of lignites, soil and peat ( Van Oosten et al., 2017 ). Humic substances are supramolecular structures with hydrophilic (-OH and -COOH groups) and hydrophobic portions, resulting from the association of small molecules by the decomposition processes of animals, plants, or from the metabolic activity of soil microbes ( Franzoni et al., 2022 ; Popa et al., 2022 ).…”

“…Biostimulants based on humic substances (HS) contain fulvic and/or humic acids, which are the major components of soil organic matter [58,72]. Humic substances biostimulants result from the decomposition processes of animals and plants, or the activity of soil microbes [48,73]. Humic substances are mostly composed of small amphitatic molecules that can form (supra)molecular aggregates in solution.…”
