“…There are several factors that can interfere with the final result of treatment, and serious limitations of the functional capacity of the shoulder are frequent, no matter what therapeutic method is used. 8,14 One of the causes of functional limitation of the shoulder is varus angulation of the humeral head, a sequela that is not often mentioned in the literature, 2,4,5,9,10 which is related not only to the acceptance of unsuccessful closed reduction but also to imperfect open reduction and internal fixation. In such cases, varus deformity of the proximal humerus causes limited active abduction or limited forward flexion.…”

“…Finally, although a variety of pathological conditions can produce humerus varus, i.e. osteomalacia and rickets, neonatal infection, tumour formation, thalassaemia, cretinism and generalized spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia (Davies, 1956;Ogden et al, 1976;Ellefsen et al, 1994), in the case of the skeleton from Eleutherna there is no evidence of underlying disease or recent trauma and, consequently, the causation is possibly one of untreated intrauterine or early childhood trauma (Bourbou, 2001b).…”
