Human α-Lactalbumin and Bovine β-Lactoglobulin Absorption in Premature Infants

Abstract: The absorption of alpha-lactalbumin (ALA) and bovine beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) was investigated in 23 healthy preterm infants with gestational ages of 32 to 36 wk. The concentrations of ALA and BLG in serum after a milk feeding were measured at intervals during the first 8 mo of life. We used a time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay to measure the proteins. Measurable amounts of ALA were found on d 7 after birth, and at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8 mo in 23 of 23, 13 of 18, 13 of 18, six of 17, eight of 16, and five of 13, respe… Show more

“…Human ALA and bovine BLG were detected in 19 (45%) and four (10%) of our 42 subjects, respectively. We did not measure protein permeability in healthy controls, but in an earlier study we detected ALA in only one of 20 healthy infants older than 8 months (2,32).…”

“…BLG is relatively pepsin‐resistant throughout the gastric phase and has a fast‐gastric emptying, followed by rapid intestinal hydrolysis ( in vitro and in vivo data) leading to absorption of amino acids in the proximal intestine (Mahé et al, 1995, 1996; Rieu et al, 2007; Farnfield et al, 2009; Sanchón et al, 2018; Mackie et al, 2019). Systemic absorption of undigested BLG may occur in infants, owing to gut transient permeability to BLG when cow's milk‐based formula is started (Kuitunen et al, 1994).…”
