Human Waste Recycling Under Tropical Conditions

Abstract

The stabilization of human nightsoil mixed with water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and vegetable leaves by a simple composting method was found to be effective. This composting method does not require mechanical aeration or pile turning, but does retain most of the vaulable nutrients and inactivates a large portion of the microorganisms present in the compost piles. A considerable yield of Tilapia was obtained when the composted product was applied as feed to fish ponds. The technical feasibility together with the microbiological aspects of the integrated scheme of compost-fed fish ponds is discussed.
