The variation in the reactivity of red blood cells (RBC) with HLA haemagglutinins was studied, and the influence of some variable factors evaluted. A comparison of the HLA reactivity of RBC with automated and manual methods, showed the superiority of the Auto- Analyzer technique. The similarity in the nature and behaviour of HLA RBC antigens and the related Chido and Rg antigens is discussed. Inhibition/adsorption experiments were performed, and the results did not support the theory that HLA antigens on RBC originate from serum-HLA-active substance. The strength of the HLA reactivity of RBC from a donor was shown to vary from time to time without evidence of clinical disease.

The mixed leukocyte reaction (MLR) responses of 29 patients with classic rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were compared with those of 24 age-and sex-matched healthy controls. Pools of stimulating cells were selected to include the major cross-reacting HL-A specificities. In pooled human serum the MLR response of the RA lymphocytes was significantly enhanced relative to the response controls (P < 0.05). In autologous serum there was suppression of the MLR response in patients with RA which correlated with disease activity. The data suggest the presence of an intrinsically enhanced cellular reactivity of RA lymphocytes suppressed by serologic factor(s). The mechanisms of this enhancement of suppression are discussed.

Genetics of the C 3 System

The C 3 types were determined in 56 Norwegian families with 172 children and in 1,220 Norwegian mother/child combinations. No exceptions from the rules of inheritance were observed. Variant C 3 types was seen in 3 families. The inheritance of the two common C 3 proteins was studied in a compiled family material comprising 152 Caucasian American, German, and Norwegian families with 376 children. No deviations from a normal inheritance pattern were observed. The present study revealed no indication of association between C 3 types and phenotypes within the ABO, Rh, MN, Hp, Gc or PGM₁ systems.
