Human Suffering in Black Theology

Abstract

Challenged by the "theological tussling" provoked by events within her own experience, the author was led to explore the response of Black Theology to the question of human suffering and God's role in it. Wliile this article does not claim to be an exhaustive review of the output of Black tlieologians in this area, it outlines perspectives within three main groupings from the North American context and also includes contributions from British Black Theology. While the author concedes that no single perspective can provide all Black communities (and humanity as a whole) with a satisfactory response to the question of human suffering, she contends that all can potentially be tised as sources of motivation for action and resistance against suffering and oppression.
