Human Pythiosis, Brazil

Abstract: Pythiosis, caused by Pythium insidiosum, occurs in humans and animals and is acquired from aquatic environments that harbor the emerging pathogen. Diagnosis is difficult because clinical and histopathologic features are not pathognomonic. We report the first human case of pythiosis from Brazil, diagnosed by using culture and rDNA sequencing.

“…However, these techniques display variable sensitivity and specificity, especially during early infection when the immune response is not fully mounted (8). Definitive diagnosis can be achieved using molecular methods, including species-specific nested PCR (3) or DNA sequencing of variable regions (1,2).…”

“…2 Human pythiosis cases occur worldwide but are probably underrecognized and thus, misdiagnosed. 7,8 We report a case of contact lens-related P. insidiosum keratitis imported in France after traveling to Thailand, in which the strain was identified by nucleic acid sequencing and the patient was cured with a large therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty.…”
