Human picornaviruses associated with neurological diseases and their neutralization by antibodies

Abstract: Picornaviruses are the most commonly encountered infectious agents in mankind. They typically cause mild infections of the gastrointestinal or respiratory tract, but sometimes also invade the central nervous system. There, they can cause severe diseases with long-term sequelae and even be lethal. The most infamous picornavirus is poliovirus, for which significant epidemics of poliomyelitis were reported from the end of the nineteenth century. A successful vaccination campaign has brought poliovirus close to er… Show more

“…EV-A71 is an etiological agent of the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) and has occasionally been associated with upper respiratory tract infections. EV-D68 causes different types of upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including severe respiratory syndromes [171]. Both serotypes have been associated with neurological disorders like acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), myelitis (AFM), meningitis and encephalitis [166,[172][173][174][175].…”

“…Interestingly, it did not demonstrate highly potent protection against the viral challenge ( Figure 4 (D)). Several studies have reported that specific antibody response is significantly effective in repelling small RNA viral infections [ 27 ]. We thus speculated the CV-A16-specific antibodies, induced by this vaccine candidate, may not be able to adequately perform their primary function in vivo .…”

“…Enteroviruses (EVs) are a group of single, positive-stranded RNA viruses of the Picornaviridae family that include poliovirus, coxsackievirus, echovirus and enterovirus, with the latter (specifically EV-A71 and EV-D68) emerging as the causative agents of the recent large epidemics across the Asia-Pacific and North American region, respectively (Huang and Shih, 2015 ; Anastasina et al, 2017 ). Although EVs commonly cause asymptomatic infection, sometimes they are associated with severe diseases, including neurological complications.…”
