Human papillomavirus vaccine coverage among female Australian adolescents: success of the school‐based approach

Abstract: The catch-up HPV vaccination program delivered over 1.9 million doses of HPV vaccine to girls aged 12-17 years, resulting in 70% of girls in this age group being fully vaccinated. The range in coverage achieved and the lower uptake documented among Indigenous girls suggest that HPV vaccination programs can be further improved.

“…In addition, vaccine programme and communication strategies have a very large effect on uptake. Uptake of HPV vaccines is low in the USA and Germany [9,10] and high in Australia, [11] while uptake rates in Africa vary. [12][13][14] Vaccine uptake, calculated as the proportion of girls who received one vaccine dose from the total IC, was 64.0% for the total group in this study.…”

Prince Edward Island had high rates after the sixth year of the school-based VP: 85% and 79% completion for girls and boys, respectively.…”

“…The main vaccination analysis incorporated the HPV vaccination coverage as reported in Three scenarios were investigated. The baseline analysis used reported three-dose coverage in females (Brotherton et al 2013a, Brotherton et al 2013b, Immunise Australia 2013, and assumed equivalent age-specific coverage in males offered vaccination from 2013. A lower end scenario assumed uptake in males was only half that achieved in…”
