Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Series Initiation and Completion, 2008–2009

Abstract: Although HPV vaccine coverage rates are increasing, they are still below target levels. Recommendations by providers to adolescent patients and parents likely would improve vaccine uptake. Parental education regarding disease risks and benefits of HPV vaccination before exposure is needed to promote vaccine uptake.

“…Further research is needed to better understand the factors associated with racial/ethnic differences in HPV vaccination coverage among male adolescents. Several other characteristics, such as having more physician contacts in the past 12 months, and having a well-child visit at age 11-12 years were independently associated with HPV vaccination initiation, consistent with other vaccination studies among adolescents (25)(26)(27)(28). Physician recommendations for vaccination are associated with a patient's decision to get vaccinated (25)(26)(27)(28).…”
