Human Papillomavirus-specific Genotypes in Cervical Lesions of Women Referred for Smears With Atypical Glandular Cells or Adenocarcinoma In Situ

Abstract: This study was designed to analyze whether specific human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes may predict histologic outcomes in women with glandular abnormalities in their cervical smears. Of the 160 women included, 111 were diagnosed with atypical glandular cells, 35 had both atypical glandular cells and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, whereas 14 women had AIS, in 1 case associated with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. All women underwent colposcopic examinations and biopsy was performed … Show more

“…The prevalence of HPV in women with LSIL is in agreement with worldwide studies and is estimated to be between 29 and 100%. 23 The prevalence of HPV in women with AGC is within the expected range (22–43%) 24–26 in previous studies and the prevalence of HPV in women with ASC is also within the range of ASCUS/LSIL triage studies (32–78%). 27…”

“…Thirteen studies had a moderate risk of bias [29], [41], [44], [68], [70], [73], [82], [92], [101][105] and the rest carried a high risk of bias. HPV DNA was retrieved from fixed biopsies in 34.2%, from exfoliated cells in 34.2%, from fresh biopsies in 19.7%, and from exfoliated cells and fresh biopsies in 11.8% of the studies.…”

“…40 However, much high prevalence rate has been reported by other groups: Rabelo-Santos found an overall hrHPV rate of 43% in women with AGC or AIS Paps. 41 HPV 16 was the most prevalent type followed by HPV 18. HPV 16 was significantly associated with squamous and glandular neoplasia and HPV 18 with glandular neoplasia.…”

“…HPV 16 was significantly associated with squamous and glandular neoplasia and HPV 18 with glandular neoplasia. 41 Histopathologic follow-up results in hrHPV positive and negative women We studied 662 women with AGC, hrHPV results, and follow-up data. Among the 75 cases with hrHPV-positive AGC results, 17.3% had CIN 2/3, 13.3% had AIS, and 4.0% had cervical invasive adenocarcinoma, whereas for 234 women with hrHPVnegative results, 0.4% had CIN2/3, 0.4% had cervical adenocarcinoma, and 3.4% had endometrial carcinoma.…”
