Human papillomavirus infection and cervical cancer prevention in Indonesia

Abstract

Cervical cancer is commonly caused by human papillomavirus infection. However, cervical cancer is one that can be prevented. In this article, the authors wish to use secondary data to assess cervical cancer incidence and mortality in Indonesia, which has almost the most frequent incidence of cervical cancer in Asia. As a developing country, the authors also explored the effectiveness of screening and vaccination in the country. Clearly, screening and vaccination coverage in Indonesia is low, so the authors also describe the possibility of improving Indonesia's ability to prevent cervical cancer in the future. In November 2020, the World Health Organization is preparing to launch a worldwide strategy to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer as a public health issue. Projections suggest that Indonesia could avoid more than 3 million deaths from cervical cancer over the next century if the three major elimination strategies (vaccinations, screening strategies, and treatments) were perfected. As a result, the authors found that while HPV coverage in Indonesia is very low across Asia and there is no awareness of prevention, WHO could try to initiate this broad strategy to accelerate the eradication of cervical cancer as a public health issue, focusing on three early stages Areas such as screening, vaccines and treatments will provide women in Indonesia with a promising future.
