Human papilloma virus: An etiological and prognostic factor for oral cancer?

Abstract: The increasing prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV)-positive oral tumors can be considered an epidemic. Although the incidence of HPV cervical cancer is decreasing, the incidence of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers associated with HPV is increasing. The presence of certain HPV genotypes could be a predictor of future oral cancer lesions, although lesions associated with HPV could be less aggressive and exhibit a higher survival rate. In the present study, we review the most important biologic, clinic… Show more

“…Some rare functional SNPs may have an influence on survival. Finally, the human papilloma virus (HPV) status and inflammatory cytokines expression of patients was not included in the analysis and may limit the interpretation of our findings; hence, HPV and cytokines may affect survival [37,38]. However, a major strength of our study is that all the patients had a similar tumor stage and received the same treatment.…”

“…HPV is one of the major causes of viral sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and has been suggested as a potential risk factor for development of genitourinary cancers [7]. The etiologic role of high risk types of HPV (16 and 18) in development of different cancers has been suggested previously [8][9][10][11]. Currently, there are several studies that described a correlation between HPV and development of bladder cancer.…”
