Human motion behavior while interacting with an industrial robot

Abstract: Human workers and industrial robots both have specific strengths within industrial production. Advantageously they complement each other perfectly, which leads to the development of human-robot interaction (HRI) applications. Bringing humans and robots together in the same workspace may lead to potential collisions. The avoidance of such is a central safety requirement. It can be realized with sundry sensor systems, all of them decelerating the robot when the distance to the human decreases alarmingly and appl… Show more

“…The societal landscape of occupation (paid, unpaid, leisure, daily activity…) and humans as occupational being (1-11) is one area of impact of STI. Recent STI advancements with occupational impact include robotics (3,5,(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18), autonomous cars (5,19,20), brain machine interfaces (21), and human enhancement (22)(23)(24)(25). Given the continuous impact of STI on individuals and society it is not surprising that many discourses engage with how to deal with the impact of STI advancements.…”

“…By applying Equation 2, the working time to assemble the whole panel (T a ) is 15 hours. For estimating the working times in HRI configuration (Step 2 of procedure in Figure 1), about humans, several studies assess that in presence of robots, which may have predictable or unpredictable motions [41], humans are negatively influenced by the presence a robot [42,43], so the human working times for each operation have increased in a range between 10-20% of the estimated time, according to the type of operation. About the robots, KUKA estimated a mean reduction of working times, when a task is performed by a robot, of about 30% with respect to humans' times [44].…”

“…One of the most relevant characteristics for the assessment of physical strain during industrial working tasks is the EAWS scoring system. Based on an assessment of necessary tasks, the physical strain mainly includes By summing up scores according to the different levels of risks as shown in (2), the resulting EAWS point score for a workplace indicates whether it is ergonomically harmless, demanding, or even physically harmful. The highest category is marked in red colour on the ergonomic evaluation scheme and needs short-term improvement.…”

“…Against the background of multiple megatrends, today's production is required to provide flexible and agile technologies while saving energy and resources [1]. To use the advantages of automation while keeping human operators and their flexibility in the process, human-robot interaction (HRI) is a promising and highly topical solution [2]. Nevertheless, the industrial use of HRI is still small due to a lack of overview for the multiple provided benefits, uncertainties for the difficult approval procedures and due to a shortage of experienced technology providers and integrators [3].…”
