“…The specific peculiarities of space missions to Mars pose unique challenges including long duration and distance, which, for the first time, involve the so-called 'Earth-out-of-view phenomenon'. The participants in such a mission must have a high degree of autonomy and the capacity to adapt to an ICE environment, a changing workload imposed on space flyers ranging from underloading to overloading, a complex psychosocial situation characterized by a lack of privacy and enforced social contacts with other crewmembers, and separation from the usual social network of family and friends (Kanas, 2011;Manzey, 2004). Consequently, the potential of these stressors to lead to symptoms of mood disturbance and stress cannot be underestimated.…”

“…Consequently, the effectiveness of the CMO in dealing with psychological issues may be enhanced if the crew feels that he/she is "part of the team" and that concerns raised would be kept confidential to the greatest extent possible. Manzey [16] felt that new psychological challenges would be faced in a mission to Mars. However, for the most part he felt that these issues could be addressed in crew selection and training and by support from Earth.…”

“…Whether longer duration in bed rest and even outer space (e.g. a voyage to Mars and staying on the planet's surface may take 1000 days) (Manzey, ) will affect astronauts' cooperative and aggressive behaviors differently needs to be investigated in the future. Further research should detect behavioral trends in real space flight with longer duration, which can be combined with the present research and fully consider the influence on cooperative and aggressive behaviors.…”
