“…Echoing the concerns expressed by Reyes et al. (2023) [ 112 ], there is a continued need to examine HM from a systems perspective. Many HM components are interrelated and should be considered in concert with each other.…”

“…Studies exploring associations of maternal nutritional status with the vitamin composition of breastmilk have revealed that some vitamins might be inadequate for the growing infant, as a consequence of compromised maternal nutritional status ( 87 97 ) and poor maternal diet ( 97 100 ). However, the latest systematic review on HM components and infant anthropometry in the first 2 years of life among term infants uncovered no eligible studies for several vitamins including, riboflavin, C, D, E, and K and concluded that for others, the available evidence was largely inconclusive and further studies were needed ( 101 ). In our exploratory study in Guatemala where most women breastfeed but infants experience growth faltering by 3 months ( 40 , 102 ), we were able to observe correlations between selected nutrient intakes, the HMM, and infant growth.…”

“…Infant growth has been studied intensively in relation to many different factors, including feeding practices and HM components 42 . However, few, if any, have taken a systems biology approach.…”

“…Despite this large body of literature, the intricate relationships between the multitude of HM components and a plethora of maternal, infant, and environmental factors are poorly understood because research has typically focused on selected modalities and individual HM components or component types 42 . There is a growing recognition among researchers that multidisciplinary and systems biology approaches are required to decipher these complex relationships 9 11 .…”
